Any Iodine in the diet is rapidly absorbed as iodide and is carried by the blood to the thyroid. In the thyroid Iodide is oxidised to iodine which is combined by the amino acid l-tyrosine to produce mono and di-iodotyrosines,his is further converted into two of the three thyroid hormones called T3 Tri-iodithyronine and T4 thyroxin.
The hypothalamus releasing hormone controlling these two hormones is called TRH Thyrotropic Releasing hormone which activates TSH pituitary hormone [Thyrotropic Stimulating hormone.] Sodium Chloride, table salt is toxic anyway and does not contain iodine so it is sometimes added. Sea salt on the other hand naturally contains Iodine as well as all the other essential trace elements necessary for life. The salty fluid in our bodies is identical to sea water.
Deficiency of iodine causes many serious health problems, including thyroid malfunction, goitre, malfunction of the metabolism, weight gain, constipation, depression.
